What we do

What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning?

Same method, same horses: the difference is the goal.

EAP addresses something clinical.

EAL helps participants build a practical skill.

EAP

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

  • Clinical in purpose, even though it's not talk therapy. Used for trauma processing, anxiety, grief, burnout, emotional regulation.
  • Confidential, therapeutic framing. Sessions are treated the way a therapy session would be.

Best fit for

Individuals or groups where there's a real emotional or psychological need being addressed.

  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Mother Daughter Connection Groups
  • Dad Daughter Connection Groups
  • Couples retreats
  • Women's groups
  • Resilience and emotional wellness groups
A quiet moment with one of the horses at the fence line

EAL

Equine Assisted Learning

  • Educational and developmental in purpose, not clinical.
  • Skills based outcomes: trust, delegation, nonverbal communication, team dynamics, decision making under pressure.

Best fit for

Anyone who wants the insight without the clinical framing.

  • Corporate leadership workshops
  • Executive and organizational teams
  • Healthcare team resilience and burnout prevention
  • School faculty development
  • Church staff retreats
  • Nonprofit boards and leadership teams

Why horses?

The learning sticks

Equine-assisted work engages the whole nervous system. It's embodied, not conceptual.

Horses are natural mirrors. They respond to what's actually happening in the room, not what people project. That's where the insight lives.

Because feedback comes from a horse rather than a person, it lands without judgment, comparison, or ego defense.

Evidence based, clinician led

Every session follows the EAGALA model, led by a licensed professional counselor + certified equine specialist.

Honest, real time feedback

Horses respond to non-verbal cues and emotional state the moment it happens. Participants can't fake it.

No ego defense

Feedback from a horse lands differently than feedback from a person. No social comparison, no expectations.

A growing body of research shows that horses don't just comfort, they measurably shift human physiology.

Larger heart electromagnetic field than a human's

Within minutes, human and horse heart rate begin to synchronize. It is why people talk about feeling calmer just being in a horse's presence.

10–15 bpm

Drop in human heart rate from being near horses

Measured in people who arrived stressed.

Cortisol

Measurable cortisol reduction after equine-assisted sessions

Alongside increased oxytocin, the hormone tied to trust and connection. Horses change the body's stress chemistry, not just the mood in the room.

The model we use

What is EAGALA?

The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association sets the international standard for this work. Every session pairs a licensed mental health professional with a certified equine specialist and the horses, and all of it happens on the ground. There is no riding and no horsemanship to learn.

All facilitators at Beacon Ranch are EAGALA certified.

EAGALA is a solutions focused modality. Rather than being taught a lesson, participants work through structured activities with the horses and draw their own conclusions. That is why the insight tends to stay with people: they are given the space to arrive at it themselves.

The EAGALA model has been studied directly. In a 2025 multi site evaluation of EAGALA sessions with 107 veterans and active duty service members across 12 facilities, participants attended 98% of their scheduled sessions, and PTSD symptoms, depression and functional disability all decreased.

Is this for you?

This might be for you if…

  • You're navigating a transition - career, relationship, health, identity
  • You've done therapy and want to try something embodied
  • You're a high-performer who can't stop performing, even when resting
  • You feel disconnected from yourself, your body, or what you actually want
  • You're ready to be somewhere quiet for a few days
  • You're looking for education on emotional regulation

This is probably not for you if…

  • You're in an acute mental health crisis - we care deeply about your safety and would encourage connecting with a crisis professional first
  • You're looking for a spa weekend (this is relaxing and nourishing, but real work)
  • You're expecting guaranteed specific outcomes - retreats create conditions and space, but not guarantees
  • You're uncomfortable being around horses or outdoors for extended periods

Frequently asked

Do I need experience with horses?

No. Most of our guests have never worked with horses before. The horses don't require any skill.

Is this therapy?

Our group retreats are facilitated experiences, not group therapy. Danielle is a licensed counselor (LPC) and brings clinical frameworks to the work, but retreats are not a substitute for individual therapy. Some guests attend alongside their own therapist.

What's the group size?

Sessions are capped at 8 per session. Weekend sessions are capped at 6 per session. Private sessions can have custom group sizes.

What should I bring?

Clothes you can move in, a journal, closed toe shoes for the arena and interacting with horses, and layers for Texas weather.

What's your cancellation policy?

There is a covered arena onsite to ensure we can do our sessions in any weather. No refunds within 30 days.

The barn and arena at Snowdonia Sporthorse Complex

About Beacon Ranch

A Texas ranch sanctuary built on clinical expertise, business rigor, and a shared belief in slow, intentional work.

How Beacon Ranch came to be

The Beacon Ranch concept took shape when Danielle was a kid. She never had the opportunity to ride horses, but loved going to the barn with her friend who took lessons. Fast forward, Danielle's first daughter showed interest in riding after exposure to pony club. When her daughter began taking lessons at Snowdonia Sporthorse Complex ("Snowdonia") in Brookshire, TX, Danielle had time to wander in the pastures and spend time with the horses on her own. During a particularly hard time in life, Danielle found herself looking forward to the naturally grounding experience of time spent with horses in nature with no expectations: this is how the Beacon Ranch concept came to life.

After more than 15 years as a licensed counselor, registered dietitian and functional medicine coach, Danielle knew she wanted a way to care for the whole person in a peaceful environment that went beyond a 50 min. session. As a first step, she obtained her EAGALA certification to offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to her clients at Snowdonia. The next step was to launch Beacon Ranch in order to allow participants to immerse themselves in nature and learn from the horses.

One day she received a call from her barn friend, Rachel, who boarded and trained at Snowdonia for many years. Rachel mentioned she was looking for a way to combine her finance, accounting and sales background into a business that combined mental health and horses: and the partnership began.

Rachel has loved horses her entire life, but the real passion began on a trip to Yellowstone National Park with her family at age 7 when she rode a grey horse named "Gus". From there, she was hooked.

After pursuing competitive Three Day Eventing (an equestrian triathlon) in her early teens and adult years, she took a decades long break from horses. Rachel went to the University of Texas at Austin to pursue her Bachelors in Business and Masters in Accounting, then obtained her CPA. She moved to New York City after school and quickly realized accounting was not her calling. She tried Investment Banking next for two years, then transitioned into B2B tech sales. After coming back to Texas during COVID, she decided to go take a riding lesson for old times sake. In that first lesson she met her horse Nemo, now 21 and retired, who is one of the Beacon Ranch Retreat program horses.

Both Danielle and Rachel share a love for the healing power of nature and horses. By blending the tranquility of nature with the therapeutic presence of horses and the power of community, Danielle and Rachel hope Beacon Ranch Retreat Center will be a sanctuary for facilitating awareness.

What we stand for

Clinical comes first, wellness follows

Retreats that aren't grounded in clinical frameworks tend to feel good and change little. We build ours the other way around.

Real work, real rest

Guests won't be pushed through constant programming. Part of what the land offers is the room to do nothing - we think that's part of the work, not a break from it.

Small groups, always

We cap every retreat at sizes small enough for each guest to be seen. No one gets lost in our programs.

Build the business with the same care we bring to the work

We run Beacon Ranch as a real business with the operational rigor that wellness brands often lack and the clinical integrity that business operators typically don't have access to.

Danielle Mitchell, co-founder of Beacon Ranch Retreat Center

Meet Danielle

Danielle has spent her career at the intersection of mental health, nutrition, and whole-body medicine. As the Co-Founder of the Cognizant Group, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, she works with clients who've often tried the standard approaches and come looking for something more integrated.

Danielle grew up loving horses from the ground and began combining equine-assisted work with her clinical practice 2 years ago utilizing the EAGALA modality. At Beacon Ranch, she leads the clinical framework, designs the retreat programming and brand strategy.

Outside of work, Danielle runs the Cognizant Group with her husband Bryan, spends time with her 4 kids and enjoys horses from the ground.

She still cares for her individual therapy and dietary clients through The Cognizant Group.

Rachel Clyde, co-founder of Beacon Ranch Retreat Center

Meet Rachel

Rachel brings her background in accounting and finance to Beacon Ranch Retreat Center. Her career took shape after she received her Masters in Professional Accounting and became a CPA (inactive). From there she spent 3 years in M&A and 6 years in B2B sales. Working in high growth start ups has shaped her approach to building and running Beacon Ranch.

Rachel has spent most of her life around horses and experienced burnout in her career which is how she immediately recognized the unmet need in many work environments of caring for the whole person as part of a team.

At Beacon Ranch, Rachel leads operations, business development, corporate partnerships, and is an equine specialist.

Outside of Beacon Ranch, Rachel spends time with her husband Campbell and dog Duck, enjoys bareback rides on her horse Nemo and competes in Three Day Eventing with her horse Craig.
